But being jobless and home all day -- whether cooking in the kitchen or cooking in the bedroom -- can lead to frustration with the job hunt that can lead to depression and ultimately migrate to the bed, said Debra Laino, a sex therapist and relationship counselor.

Continue reading Getting cheap sex in a recession

Getting cheap sex in a recession originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Wed, 25 Nov 2009 15:00:00 EST. In fact, a recent government survey found that more than one in seven U.S. households are finding it difficult to afford putting food on the table.

Those 14.5% of U.S. households, representing about 49 million people, make up the highest rate of "food-insecure" households since the U.S. Department of Agriculture began monitoring the issue in 1995. As the recession has deepened, so has the number of people using food stamps from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, with participation growing by 23% in the last year, according to Hans Billger of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The situation would be far worse if not for food pantries and federal food assistance programs, such as SNAP. For the nearly 35.9 million people who receive SNAP benefits, they're a lifeline to survival. In July, more people were using SNAP benefits than at any other time in the history of the program.

The average SNAP benefit for one person is $101.53 per month with a maximum of $200. For a household of four, the average benefit is $226.59 per month (the maximum benefit is $668 per month). WalletPop recently spoke with a few families who rely on food stamps to find out just how hard it is to stretch their resources and put healthy meals on the table.
Continue reading Food stamp use skyrockets: How one family puts food on the table

Food stamp use skyrockets: How one family puts food on the table originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Wed, 25 Nov 2009 10:00:00 EST.
For the unemployed who no longer have a workplace holiday party to attend, the next best thing can be going to a Christmas party at their spouse's workplace. Or maybe their friend's workplace. Or a friend of a friend.

Continue reading How not to be an unemployed 'downer' at spouse's holiday office party

How not to be an unemployed 'downer' at spouse's holiday office party originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Tue, 24 Nov 2009 13:00:00 EST. And a few weeks after Thanksgiving, more people will be preparing to travel for Christmas, making now a good time to review government recommendations on travel during swine flu season.

Nobody wants another travel scene like last spring in Mexico, when thousands of travelers canceled trips to Mexico after a swine flu outbreak there.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a whole list of interim guidelines for flight crews regarding the swine flu, and probably the best among them for travelers is that "People with symptoms of novel influenza A (H1N1) virus infection should not leave home or travel."
Continue reading Travel with the flu during holidays and you could end up in quarantine

Travel with the flu during holidays and you could end up in quarantine originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 15:00:00 EST. Or 34 years. Take your pick. Either way, it's a loss for Detroit and the surrounding area.

The Pontiac Silverdome was sold this week at auction for $583,000, or about 1% of the $55.7 million it took to build it in 1975, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

The sale was halted Wednesday when a judge ordered an injunction to stop it after a complaint was filed by developer H. Wallace Parker, who claims he had an agreement with the city to buy it, according to Crain's Detroit Business.
Continue reading Detroit's Silverdome almost sold for 1% of original cost

Detroit's Silverdome almost sold for 1% of original cost originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 16:00:00 EST.
I wrote about the site in October, and was impressed by its various filters to help narrow job searches.

Among the tips that Larkin suggests for spotting fake postings on job boards are to not apply for jobs that require you to move money from one bank account to another, which is essentially money laundering, and looking for misspellings in a job post.

Filling in air gaps where heat escapes from homes is a good start to cutting heating bills and thus cut America's energy use, but any stimulus project aimed at homes should look at how most American homes are heated and how to do it more efficiently.

New York Times columnist David Leonhardt recently wrote about the home weatherization version of the wildly successful cash for clunkers program. It would help put contractors and construction workers back to work insulating homes and caulking air leaks, while saving homeowners money in the long term by weatherizing their homes.

As someone who recently spent four boring and frustrating days sitting on a jury, the $30 that I'll get wasn't worth the hassle and won't make me volunteer for it, no matter how underemployed I am.

Other than the civic duty involved, it's a waste of time as far as getting paid. My recent jury duty netted me $1.53 per hour.

Besides, if I was a lawyer I wouldn't want a juror who was there for the money and would be likely to extend deliberations a few more days for some extra pay.
Continue reading Unemployed seek jury duty for pay, but it's not worth it

Unemployed seek jury duty for pay, but it's not worth it originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Thu, 19 Nov 2009 11:00:00 EST.
"I swear that Christmas will not be canceled this year," Father Christmas told Finnish national broadcaster YLE, explaining that many children were worried he would catch swine flu, according to an ATP story.

And in what may not look like the kindest move after a child has left his lap, Santa Claus is pulling out the hand sanitizer and tissues more than ever this holiday season in an effort to ward off swine flu and the seasonal flu.

The figures are from the American Farm Bureau Federation, which has conducted the annual survey since 1986 as an informal gauge of price trends around the nation.

Everyone wants the latest in fashion, but paying $169.99 for a new home jersey that doesn't look much different than the 2009 model seems like a waste of money.

The best news is that the new jersey costs $10 less than the old one, but that may be more a sign of the recession than of the Twins subtly trying to offer a deal on something that is outrageously priced to begin with.
Continue reading Another team unveils new look to get fans to buy

Another team unveils new look to get fans to buy originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Tue, 17 Nov 2009 15:00:00 EST.
Cobbling together enough part-time jobs to add up to full-time work is becoming the skill set of the new part-time workforce.

A new economy is being formed, or at least expanded upon, as more laid off workers join the ranks of freelancers and contract workers who don't get benefits such as paid vacation and sick days, but get paid for each project they complete.
First came an interactive Web site from Microsoft to help diagnose the swine flu.

Now comes a flu shot finder from Google to help find shots for the regular flu and swine flu. If only Microsoft and Google combined their efforts in battling H1N1, we'd have this problem solved.

The swine flu is causing the worst flu season in the United States since 1997, when current measurements started. So far the virus has killed an estimated 3,900 people, according to a Reuters story.
Continue reading Use Google Flu-shot to find local H1N1 vaccination

Use Google Flu-shot to find local H1N1 vaccination originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Fri, 13 Nov 2009 13:30:00 EST.
Cada, 21, won the $8.55 million jackpot in the World Series of Poker, making him the youngest winner of the event.

Cada started playing poker on the Internet when he was 16, and he was so good at math that he later dropped out of community college to pursue a career as a professional gambler.

It's not a career path that Cada recommends anyone follow, although speaking to the Detroit Free Press from his high-roller, 9,000-square-foot suite at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas is an odd place in which to be doling out that type of career advice.
Continue reading Dropping out of community college pays off for poker champ

Dropping out of community college pays off for poker champ originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Fri, 13 Nov 2009 08:00:00 EST.
They discuss how to best use the job boards as a tip service leading to more networking to reach the right person who is hiring, and how difficult it is to get a job by using a job board.
I say surprisingly because in a recession, I'd expect crime to increase as more people lose their jobs and have to find other ways -- some illegal -- to make money.

It turns out my suburban city isn't alone. Large and small cities across the country are seeing crime drop -- particularly burglaries -- during the recession. "With a lot more unemployed people, a lot more people are staying home, and they see more in their neighborhood," Sgt. Thomas Lasater of the police department in St. Louis County, Mo., told the Associated Press.

We'll see if it turns out the same way with her savings account we recently opened together, but it couldn't have been a strong lesson in how to save money when immediately after leaving the bank, we went to a store where I bought her a promised toy.

I'll get back to the toy spending in a bit, but first I'd like to focus on the good part of that afternoon -- opening a savings account in her name in an effort to teach her about saving money.

Continue reading My 5-year-old opens a savings account -- you can, too

My 5-year-old opens a savings account -- you can, too originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 16:00:00 EST.
Wal-Mart employees who miss one or more days due to sickness or other reasons, including caring for a sick child, earn a demerit point and lose eight hours of wages. Employees with more than three absences in a six-month period will be disciplined, and four demerits in six months leads to warnings that can lead to dismissal.
