Freescale Semiconductor, which supplies chips to both Amazon.com's Kindle and the Sony eReader, says it supplies 90% of the market, and some analysts say the innovation could mean some e-readers may wind up retailing for less than $150. Aside from lowering cost, Freescale's new i.MX508 processor will double speed, support larger screens and improve battery life.
Although Google calls it an "equipment recovery fee" for the phone, customers who want to break their two-year contract will still have to pay an early termination fee of $200 to T-Mobile. The Nexus One costs $179 for those customers who sign up for a two-year plan with T-Mobile or $529 to purchase an "unlocked" phone available for any wireless network.

Aside from asking about how Google decides on fees, the FCC is also asking why customers have to pay fees to both companies.

Google said in a statement that it lowered the fee to benefit customers and that it continues to make no profit off of the Nexus One.

I think $350 to cancel or downgrade service within four months (except the 14-day trial period) is a lot. While around 80,000 units were sold in January, a respectable but not unusual amount ,especially for a new phone, some critics are thinking sales may be affected by the large early termination fees. Perhaps many consumers are preferring something less cutting edge but with a more palatable fee system.<

While the Nexus One has gotten some good reviews and is no doubt a decent gadget, it's by no means the only smartphone out there, and until Google figures out how to make a slightly more economical phone, some consumers will be scared off by its high cancellation fees. However, it's too bad a company like Google, founded on the principles of being a decent rather than evil corporation, needed the FCC to step in before it considered revising its fee structure.
Google lowers Nexus One ETFs By $200, but you'll still pay $350 originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Thu, 11 Feb 2010 18:30:00 EST. And maybe it's time to tell your kids to also stop spending so much time posting status updates or clicking video links.

It's official, Facebook is the most popular social media network and because of that, it also causes businesses with Facebooking employees to be vulnerable to its viruses, or at least that's what 60% of companies believe. Perhaps that's because more than a third of the businesses were infected with malware, or software that installs malicious programs on computers. However, Toyota owners are asked to wait for their certified letter from Toyota in the mail (they're being mailed this week) before calling and setting up an appointment with their dealership, said a Toyota spokesman.

Continue reading Toyota recall fix is in the mail

Toyota recall fix is in the mail originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Wed, 03 Feb 2010 12:45:00 EST. The accounts and passwords are traded on hacker forums, with prices ranging anywhere from $82 for a Gmail account to $1,000 for Twitter accounts. The cybercriminals then use those accounts as stepping stones to infect others' computers with data-stealing malware.

The new malware, or malicious programs, are placed on Internet sites and in e-mails and when accessed take over a computer searching for banking passwords or financial information. The new malware seems to be generic spying programs that steal as much information as possible from victims, including passwords to Web-based e-mail and Twitter accounts.
Continue reading Your hacked Twitter account worth $1,000 to criminals

Your hacked Twitter account worth $1,000 to criminals originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Mon, 01 Feb 2010 16:00:00 EST.
The moon, called a wolf moon, will appear about 30% brighter and 15% bigger, mainly because it's at the closest point to the Earth. The planet Mars will also join the moon in a miniature light show, appearing to the naked eye like a bright orange star nearly as bright as Sirius -- the brightest the planet has been in two years.

The moon will be at its closest at 4:04 a.m. EST Saturday -- only 221,577 miles from Earth. A standard SLR camera with a telephoto lens will be enough to capture the view, and binoculars will help you spot the moon and Mars, as well as a beehive star cluster between the two of them.

According to National Geographic, the large moon is an optical illusion but nonetheless is still reputed to be spectacular, especially near the horizon. This closeness to the earth is called perigee, and will also create higher tides -- making canoodling near the ocean tonight doubly exciting. Scientists say the view at sunset will be even better.

Although there are many full moon myths out there -- including that it causes insanity and werewolves running amok -- the reality is less than conclusive. The werewolf thing really hasn't ever been true. The term "wolf moon" is Native American in origin, taken from the association of wolves howling in the cold winter night.
Friday is cheap date night, underneath a Wolf moon originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Fri, 29 Jan 2010 19:00:00 EST. Starting June 30, small publishers and individual writers may find that publishing directly with Amazon could mean royalties up to 70% of list price for books $2.99 to $9.99.

The Kindle Digital Text Platform allows authors to upload and format their own books to the Kindle Store. The announcement comes at a precipitous time, just before the Jan. 27 unveiling of Apple's iTablet -- rumored to be meeting with publishers over its content (the tablet computer doubles as an e-reader.) Already Apple has teamed up with HarperCollins.

Some critics say the problem is that Amazon.com demands the e-books be 20% cheaper than paper-and-ink -- if one is in existence. Those who write straight-to-digital may not be affected. Other rights would also be included, such as digital-to-voice, and Amazon.com has to be able to sell the e-book at the same price or lower than competitors.

The criticism isn't that harsh. Since most writers are lucky to receive 15% of royalties from an established publishing house, something approaching 50% may look like the Holy Grail. The idea that self-publishing -- previously something scoffed at and ridiculed -- could also be made profitable by Internet sales, would change the way books are written and published forever.
Score one for the writers! According to an article by David Carr, the Times said that it wanted to keep its casual online readers as well as its subscribers, approximately 17 million online readers.

That's because both T-Mobile and Google can charge for early cancellation. T-Mobile's ETF is $200 for canceling any time in the first 18 months of its two-year contract. Google can also charge its own $350 "equipment recover fee" for those buyers who cancel their contracts in the first 120 days. Although the phone and T-Mobile have a 14-day risk-free trial, if canceled within three months, users would be expected to pay out $550. The Nexus One without a contract, or an unlocked phone, retails for $529.

A Google spokeswoman said the equipment recover fee is standard practice for third-party resellers.

T-Mobile ETFs drop to $100 after 18 months and down to $50 with less than three months left on a two-year contract.

So, if you want a Nexus One, make sure you intend to keep it for a while or it's obviously not going to be worth the money.
Can you afford Nexus One's $550 early termination fees? originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Wed, 20 Jan 2010 09:00:00 EST.

While the Old Gray Lady made headlines in 2007 for putting all its content online, including archives, free to everyone, the company now has a change of heart, or so says New York Magazine's Intel blog.

The New York Times itself refused to comment to several journalists, causing them to speculate it's because they plan to jump aboard the Apple Tablet announcement Jan. 27.
Recently Facebook accounts have been subjected to malware that ends up spamming user contacts, and Facebook says that offering this anti-virus and anti-spyware software benefits it as much as it does its users.

Facebook definitely has interests in making that privacy less ... well, private.

Mark Zuckerberg said some more controversial things about privacy over the weekend, including how Internet privacy is no longer a social norm, and by using that same norm -- it would now begin operating Facebook like that. Critics say the whole idea that Facebook is a follower is ludicrous.

Continue reading Facebook is about selling advertising, not the Fourth Amendment

Facebook is about selling advertising, not the Fourth Amendment originally appeared on WalletPop Blog on Tue, 12 Jan 2010 17:30:00 EST.
You may know that what you are buying when you purchase a copy of Windows is the license to use the software for a particular user and computer. Sometimes that's exactly what happens, but other times it may get a little hazy with an illegal, or pirated, copy put on another machine. The computer could also be leased out, also illegally, to others.

Apparently none of this is a surprise to Microsoft, which rarely enforces its terms. So now, in order to compel businesses to comply with its new rental agreement launched this month, Microsoft is offering a 30% discount until June 30. The discounted, one-time fees range from $23 for Windows to $58 for Office Professional and are good for the life of the PC. The one-time fee would be added to the price.

Continue reading Pssst ... wanna rent Microsoft Windows and Office?
