Levi Johnston cashes in on fame by stripping for Playgirl

Filed under: Sex Sells, Celebs & Money

Levi JohnstonLooks like Levi Johnston is grabbing headlines once again. The teen famous for fathering Sarah Palin's grandson is spending hours in the gym beefing up for his Playgirl photo shoot.

Men do it, too.

What do Marilyn Monroe, Anna Nicole Smith and Holly Madison all have in common? They've all used their sensuality and sexuality to make money. And in doing so, they've all - at one time or another - been dubbed "bimbos" and "cheap".

But these babes, and women in general, haven't cornered the market on selling their sex-appeal.

Guys are also famous for baring it all and cashing in on their sexuality. Men have cast gazing glances and "made love to the camera" for decades. Errol Flynn and Rudolph Valentino weren't shamed by their sex appeal. They weren't called "bimbos" either.

Craigslist New York: looking for a Sex and the City Sequel?

Filed under: Sex Sells, Extracurriculars, Shopping, Celebs & Money

The release of the "Sex and the City" movie sequel may still be seven months away, but brace yourself for the onset of what's sure to be a nauseating barrage of promotional efforts. And at the reins of it is none other than the film's megawatt star, Sarah Jessica Parker.

WWD reports that Parker's third fragrance, SJP NYC, will hit stores in May, timed to the sequel's release. What's more, Coty, the fragrance behemoth behind the scent, is already "working with the film's producers and distributors to leverage the relationship."

As fans of the franchise probably remember, the 2.5-hour, big-screen version of "SATC" gave A-list exposure to a dizzying array of products (see Vanity Fair's roundup). And since the film grossed more than $500 million worldwide, you can bet brands will be elbowing their way into the sequel any way they can.

Here's hoping that any tie-ins between the launch of SJP NYC and "SATC 2" will occur way, way off-screen.

I'm 99% sure the creatives behind the film have too much class to write Parker's fragrance into the script. But if Carrie spritzes herself with the contents of a zebra/paisley/flowered bottle before she skips off to the rumored Stanford-Anthony wedding, I'm walking out of the theater.

Jami Bernard's Ad Rant: Why would you want it in the can?

Filed under: Sex Sells, Food, Celebs & Money, Ad Rant

In our newest column, film critic, author and book doctor Jami Bernard will take a look at advertising - commercials, billboards, social media campaigns and print ads - and weighs in on the best and worst of the bunch. Check out her video rant, and tell us what you think.

This week, we look at Bud Light Lime's new campaign called "In the Can," in which everyday people utter suggestive lines about getting it, yes, you guessed it, "in the can." Has the attempt to create buzz-worthy ads in the hope that they will go viral gone too far? Perhaps the age of the sexual ad has finally passed as consumers simply look the other way when one of these productions airs on the TV or the Web.

Advertisers need a wake-up call, not product placement in new shows

Filed under: Sex Sells, Celebs & Money

The dismal viewer numbers facing TV networks and advertisers this fall are leading them to do all sorts of tricks to keep putting dollars in the pockets of the entertainment companies and products in front of the eyeballs of consumers. One ramped up approach this season is the integrated product placement that goes so far into the story that shows are weaving story lines around the items.

Of course, this is nothing new. Millions of people have been staring at Coke glasses in front of the judges on American Idol for years, and it was more than 25 years ago that E.T. parceled out Reese's Pieces on the big screen for big bucks. But this year's efforts, as detailed in the L.A. Times, go much further, creating side shows (pun intended) -- like Desperate Housewives extra scene involving Sprint and a Heroes subplot about a Palm Pre.

The Pole Dance doll: A little girl's dream or a parent's nightmare?

Filed under: Sex Sells, Extracurriculars, Consumer Complaints

Tech blog Gizmodo posted a photo and blurb claiming the Pole Dance Doll is a real product, albeit one made in Asia for sale at off-price retailers. And while bloggers, parents and child development experts everywhere are aghast, I have to wonder why.

Isn't this, after all, the logical extension of our popular culture? Reality TV has brought strippers into our living rooms so we can root for them to find true love, win lots of money or effectively punch out the stripper doing tequila shots next to them.

Miley Cyrus twirled around a stripper pole at the Teen Choice Awards, health clubs have declared pole dancing is the new fitness craze and at least one of Bravo's Real Housewives claims to have one in her bedroom. Apparently, a girl who doesn't know her way around a pole is at an extreme disadvantage in today's society. A doll to give them a leg up could only help them in life.

Men who think strippers are fun can now buy their little girl the doll of their dreams. We no longer have to distinguish between whose dream is being fulfilled.

how to make moneyWith unemployment on the rise, there's a growing interest in ways to make money -- preferably how to make money fast.

When you don't have time to go around filling out job applications and taking night classes, your best bet for how to make quick cash might be to pay tribute to the King of Pop and start with the man in the mirror -- and ask him if he has any body parts you can sell off piecemeal for bread money. Here are a few places to get started on how to make money:

Just a little help from pina coladas: How to save money conceiving

Filed under: Sex Sells, Kids and Money, Travel

First let's repeat the mantra: if something is discounted, you did not earn the money you saved. You just failed to spend quite so much. And with that out of the way, a story of a promotion that combines a luxurious tropical vacation, would-be parents, a slightly inappropriate biological tie-in, and lots and lots of cocktails.

At the Westin Resort in Aruba, this is coral spawning season. And starting Tuesday, couples who stay at the Westin with an all-inclusive package and are "inspired by Aruba's coral mating ritual" through December 19, 2009, "and can prove they conceived during their stay," get a $300 'Conception Credit' towards a return visit to the resort in 2010. Along with the all-inclusive package is, this, according to the email press notice we were sent: "accommodations, three meals daily, unlimited drinks (yes, beer, wine and cocktails, too), a $25 dining credit for the resort's fine dining establishments, non-motorized water sports, tax and service fees and more."

Not to be topped, Hooters offers value menu

Filed under: Sex Sells, Recession Diaries

In these recessionary times, patrons of Hooters are more interested in eying their wallets than scantily clad waitresses, or so it would seem.

The Atlanta-based restaurant chain, better known for its buxom waitresses than its cuisine, is joining the gaggle of casual-dining establishments in offering a value-priced menu in the hope of drawing more... umm, clientele.

Seeing as the NFL regular season is nearly underway and testosterone is hanging heavy in the air, the new menu features a football theme, says Hooters. It's a seasonal menu for the fall.

Sandwiches and strippers: A former Subway franchisee cooks up disaster

The sandwich chain was already smarting from bad press for its mistreatment of Leon Batie, a franchise owner stationed in Afghanistan. Now it finds itself fighting another battle -- a strip club owner has used Subway-branded wrappers and menus in his combination sandwich shop and "all-nude private club."

When Anthony "Cousin Vinny" Agnello opened a Subway franchise in a Bronx, N.Y., neighborhood last year, he hoped it would be his "golden parachute," a reliable, profitable business that would help him branch out from the strip club business that had previously been his bread and butter. However, the larger-than-life Agnello quickly found himself at loggerheads with the popular sandwich company.

A recession silver lining: cheap(er) skivvies

How's this for support you can afford? This week, both Victoria's Secret and Frederick's of Hollywood announced plans to roll out less-expensive versions of their signature unmentionables in response to curtailed consumer spending.

Frederick's, which has seen a 23% drop in sales, hired a former Walmart product development executive to create a line of clothes, pajamas and underwear that would be sold in big discount chains like Kohl's, Target and Walmart. According to this article, the new offerings will be tamer than the see-through, peekaboo and otherwise skimpy lingerie for which the brand is known.

It's a high-stakes gamble; Frederick's has already gone through one bankruptcy in its 60-plus year history, and execs quoted in the article say the company has to drum up additional revenue or cut back sharply on operations. The company is hoping to have the as-yet-unnamed new line ready to go by next year's back-to-school shopping season.

For its part, Victoria's Secret parent company Limited Brands Inc. is responding to a 27% drop in profits by creating a lower-priced line of its own. Unlike Frederick's, Vicky's bargain-priced undies will be sold in its own stores. According to this article, bras in the new "everyday" collection will be around $30, still pricey for a brassiere but better than the $45-ish many of its popular styles go for.

Victoria's Secret in-house Pink brand, marketed to younger shoppers, will also get in on the action, with a new bra that will start out at a promotional price of two for $32. Limited Brands says it will be able to afford to offer its lower-priced wares by manufacturing them more cost-effectively and by marketing the heck out of its pricier products.

Sex-toy recycling company and the iPhone orgasm app

Filed under: Sex Sells, Relationships, Green

sex toy recyclingWaste not, want not; the mantra of 2009 is also the business plan of dreamscapes' Sex Toy Recycling Program. Stop giggling and read! This is environmentally responsible stuff. The company takes clean used "toys" by mail, disassembles (I'd like to see that job description) and recycles the component materials. Some of these devices (so I've heard) can be quite complex, containing motors, metal bits, rubber, silicone, plastics of various density, and, of course, batteries.

Still not convinced you want to part with your purring paramour? Those who send in a "package of toys" will receive a $10 gift card good on purchases from affiliated companies. For affiliation, companies must pay Dreamscapes a $450 fee, although agents who sell via home parties can join as a group. Apparently, these agents must accept a lot of trade-ins.

However, for Apple's iPhone owners, there may be an even better deal on self-gratification (as if owning an iPhone wasn't self-gratifying enough). According to Gizmodo, Apple has approved the MyVibe Thighs-On, an app that uses the phone's vibration capabilities to stimulate your, er, curiosity. This MyPleasure.com product could be just the ticket for those long transcontinental flights. I can see a movie based on this concept already: ****** On A Plane.

The Upside: Hard times -- the sex industry and the recession

You know the old saying: "As porn goes, so goes the nation." Okay, I made it up, but it's true. Our nation's latest economic bellwether is the sex industry.

You see, once I learned that the global recession had put Czech hookers out of work, I began to wonder whether our home-grown American hookers have also given new meaning to the phrase "massive layoffs."

The power of free: It's hard out there for a porn star

Filed under: Sex Sells, Technology, Recession

Times are tough. but when Savannah Stern, the star of Naughty Office 12, Nylons 4 and at least 350 more adult movies, has to trade in her Mercedes for her parents' old Trailblazer you know the porn industry has experienced a little shrinkage.

The Los Angeles Times followed Savannah around to her $300 cocktail job and a 35th anniversary celebration for Hustler and found out that she's not the only porn star who's struggling to get by.

Surprisingly the culprit in the pornography downturn isn't the recession. Even though it has played a role in the adult entertainment industry's woes, it's far from the leading lady.

Easy ways to make money fast: Sperm donation?

As college students get ready for a new year of classes, there's a lot more to worry about than Shakespeare and molecular biology. With the recession in full swing, colleges are raising prices at just the time when students and their families are least able to afford it. Worse, a tight job market has made it difficult for some students to raise cash the old-fashioned way: working. Since I'm headed back to college in the fall too, I came up with five ways that you can raise cash for college.

Facebook promises to vet ads using profile images

Score one for Facebook users everywhere. After it was discovered that certain applications were including ads that used profile images to push "Hot Singles" the company took notice and has changed its ad approval process protecting Facebook users.

This action is a great move for the company and shows that it is willing to listen to users even if it affects its cut of advertising revenue.

The new approval process doesn't sit well with everyone. Jennifer Martinez, who reported on the issue for GigaOm, worries that the unclear nature of the ad approval process will harm the community and create a situation similar to Apple's iPhone application approval process.
